Violence at Howe Community Park Sends 4 People Shot in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood

Law enforcement in Sacramento are examining a gunfire incident that took place Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park as officers were dispersing an unauthorized event of hundreds of attendees.

Background

Law enforcement were first dispatched to the park on Howe Avenue shortly before 6:30 Saturday evening after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. After that, another report was received about a reported physical confrontation taking place within the park grounds.

An overhead unit Howe Park shooting Sacramento searched from above but reported no active disturbance. Despite this, deputies found that an enormous crowd had congregated at Howe Park without official sanction.

The Shooting Itself

Responding units moved to clear the area by encircling the gathering and issuing commands over loudspeakers telling attendees to leave immediately. Around 15 minutes were allowed for the crowd to leave.

While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that 20 to 25 gunshots echoed through the night. The sudden gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies quickly moved to looking for those injured.

Four Victims Hospitalized

Altogether, four individuals were discovered with shooting injuries. The shooting victims — a group of one female and three male victims each apparently in their twenties — were rushed to area medical facilities. Hospital staff stated that two were treated for serious injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. Fortunately, all four were in stable condition.

Sacramento Metro Fire also responded and helped care for the four victims at the park.

The Investigation

The primary shooting scene was confirmed to have taken place adjacent to the Cottage Way side of the park alongside the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Investigators found additional spent rounds throughout the Cottage Way area. Bullet holes were observed in the wrought iron fence alongside the Home Depot. These discoveries indicated that at least one of the shooters had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was put under lockdown during the incident. Crime scene technicians and detectives stayed at the location for hours.

Arrests Made

Details gathered over scanner radio traffic revealed that a Kia vehicle had been detained in an area within Solano County. Four suspects were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento law enforcement were heading to pick up the four detainees to transport the detainees for further questioning. Video evidence confirmed that two individuals had fired weapons.
